The Ernakulam Psychiatric Society (EPS), in collaboration with the Ernakulam District Legal Services Authority (DELSA) and the NGO Maithri, successfully organized the first session of the mental health awareness program titled Mind Our Mind on October 10, 2024. This initiative aims to raise awareness about mental health and impart life skills education in the community, with a particular focus on students.
The inaugural session was held at the Muvattupuzha Court Complex and saw active participation from approximately 350 individuals. The attendees included +2 students, teachers, Student Police, NCC and NSS volunteers, and students of psychology and social work from Muvattupuzha, Kothamangalam, and Kunnathunad Taluks.
Psychiatrists Dr. Joann John and Dr. K. Sudarsan from the Ernakulam Psychiatric Society led the training session, addressing two critical topics:
1. Mental Illness
2. Intellectual Disabilities
Their insightful presentations covered the identification, management, and destigmatization of mental health conditions, with a special focus on intellectual disabilities, helping participants understand the importance of early intervention and support.
The session was highly informative, equipping participants with essential knowledge on mental health issues and empowering them to become advocates for mental health in their schools and communities. The program also highlighted the importance of life skills in managing personal mental well-being and fostering a supportive environment for others.
This successful session marks the beginning of a series of training events under the Mind Our Mind initiative, aimed at promoting mental health awareness throughout Ernakulam district.
The next sessions are scheduled to take place at Aluva and Ernakulam, targeting different regions to further expand the reach of this important initiative.
