Ernakulam Psychiatric Society (EPS), in collaboration with the Ernakulam District Legal Services Authority (DELSA) and the NGO Maithri, conducted the third session of its mental health awareness training program, Mind Our Mind, on October 17, 2024, at Ernakulam Corporation Town Hall. This initiative is designed to raise mental health awareness and life skills education, primarily targeting students and other community influencers.
The third training session saw the participation of 350 individuals, including +2 students, teachers, Student Police, NCC and NSS volunteers, and students of psychology and social work from Kanayannoor and Kochi Taluks.
The session was led by Dr. U Vivek, a psychiatrist from the Ernakulam Psychiatric Society. The two key topics covered were:
1. Mental Illness – An overview of common mental health conditions, including their symptoms, causes, and available treatments.
2. Intellectual Disabilities – Understanding intellectual disabilities, addressing the unique challenges faced by those affected, and discussing the importance of early intervention and community support.
The session provided participants with crucial information about mental health and intellectual disabilities. Attendees left with a deeper understanding of mental health issues and the importance of fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for those with intellectual disabilities. The focus on raising awareness through students also aimed to create ripple effects of mental health advocacy within their communities.
The Mind Our Mind initiative has successfully completed its third and final training session in Ernakulam district. Each session has made a positive impact by educating and empowering participants to address mental health issues and promote well-being in their schools and neighborhoods.
